Thursday November 29, 2007: The Day the President Grew Balls
From this day forward November 29, 2007 will be known by many names; Are you a COUP Pal day, the Tri(llanes) Stooges Day, Where in Metro Manila was our Mayor Day, and maybe even Clergy for Rent Day, but to me, November 29, 2007 will be known as the Day the President Grew Balls.
OK so it was a little itty bitty non event (except to the clean up crew of the Penn) to finally flex the right set of muscles. But a paraplegic that twitches a finger has to be given his props right?
I mean be honest. Gloria did good. Give the devil her due.
Normally what you'd expect from GMA would be to waffle her way through the event by "consulting" with the various civil society, religious, political, and labor groups and looking for a politically safe position.
Normally GMA would tippy-toe and consider where the incident was, who owned the location, , would they become upset if their precious property was destroyed, who the mayor was, and the consult with the Makati Business Club if it was ok to take action.
Normally if there were suspiciously supportive clergy at the site she might balk at hurting them so she might quietly genuflect in the face of the dubious but appropriate marriage of religion and business and ask the CBCP to intervene and act as mediators with the mediators of these traitors and opportunists.
Normally she would consult with her friends and relatives in case she might offend a friend or classmate or lover or driver or barber or manicurista etc etc etc.
Normally by the time all the F'in consultations were over so would the event.
Trillanes would walk out, fully fed ( the buffet was better than Oakwoods and it was nice to share the Penn's PenPal ice cream concoction with Lim), puffed up with calories and false bravado. Poster boy for how not so intelligent people can thumb their nose at the constitution they were supposed to protect.
You'd think Cory was president all over again.
But that day there was a different Gloria in the house.
Despite the fact that the Makati Police force did nothing to stop the small coterie of armed soldiers during the trip from City Hall to the Penn, despite the fact that misguided clergy volunteered to act as clerical shields ( did they wear their lucky scapular that day?), and despite the fact that they used a high value piece of real estate as part of the bargaining chip ( ill never understand that), Gloria came in and kicked that puppy's ass.
The Penn was evacuated to the best of their abilities( good job guys). The location was isolated. Finish or not finish pass your papers.
If Gloria had done this at Oakwood there would be no more proof Trillanes existed. Except perhaps a little note in his mother's drawer that read ( and I take liberties with Goose, " Dear Mr and Mrs Trillanes, the army regrets to inform you that your son, Antonio Trillanes the IV was killed because he was stupid.").
The incident also painted other telling, new, pretty, and not so pretty pictures that day.
Trillanes is a patsy. Like the smallest schoolyard bully who pushed your buttons until you popped him a good one and sent him sniveling to the principal and wailing that you hurt him. Sumbungero na iyakin pa.
Media people (freedom of the press acknowledged) are believers in the face value school of justice and procedure.
Priests can be arrested pala? Now maybe we can start taxing them.
The responses of the presidentiables to the imposition of curfew made me shudder. More concerned over 5 hours of economic activity ( which Gloria addressed anyway) than the potential for a repeat of the incident. Talk about playing to the peanut gallery. And raising the specter of martial Law? Konting swabe naman mga boss. Malayo pa ang election at hindi si Marcos Junior ang makakalaban nyo sa election.
All in all it was one of the best Thursdays in my personal history.
My only regret is that I bet a case of beer on Trillanes being shot and an all out party if he was killed.
Damn...Now Ill have to look for another excuse for a drink this Monday.
